Covering an area of 587,041kmē, a length of 1,600km and width of 570km, Madagascar is the fourth-largest island, sometimes referred to as the Eighth Continent.

Vanilla was introduced to Madagascar in the latter part of 19th century by French colonists. The country has become the leading cultivator, producer and exporter of of natural vanilla.
